- On Tuesday, January 8th, the New York State Public High School Athletic Association’s Wrestling Committee is scheduled to meet and consider a proposal that would institute state regional tournaments as part of the New York State Wrestling Championships. The State Regional Tournament proposal was developed by a working group appointed by NYSPHSAA Executive Director Nina Van Erk that included the Coaches Association and members of NYSPHSAA’s Wrestling Committee. Working together since summer and following a presentation at the NYSPHSAA’s Wrestling Committee October meeting, the working group settled on the state regional tournament proposal detailed in this newsletter as a way to address the Coaches Association’s concerns regarding opportunity and proportionality while following NYSPHSAA’s system of sectional representation, NYSPHSAA’s Championship Philosophy and holding down costs associated with the state championships.
