NYSWCA UPDATE ON
The Fight To Make It Right
Assemblyman Joe Morelle (D, Irondequoit) has sent a letter to the state's Athletic Directors (click here to read it) about the amended version of his "Fairness In Competition Bill", A2162a.
Read the memo in support of the amendment
The intent of the amended legislation is the same as the original, only the scope has changed. The bill would still require a multiple entry format for state competition based on proportionality but, as amended, the bill would now be limited to only those individual sports where the NYSPHSAA five tier classification system or a statewide qualifying standard (time or distance) is not currently being used. The amended legislation is intended to address those sports most harmed by the NYSPHSAA's unfair policies - wrestling, as we know, being the most harmed of all.
On another encouraging note, Senator Tom Libous (R, Binghamton), sponsor of the "Fairness In Competition Bill" in the New York State Senate has amended his bill S2064a to match the Assembly version. This is significant in that it shows both sponsors already agree and it will likely avoid the need for a conference committee to resolve differences.
The NYS Wrestling Coaches Association is supporting the legislation (memo of support attached) as it offers the best and probably the only chance to reform the New York State Wrestling Tournament.
