WATERTOWN WRESTLERS CAPTURE WRESTLING TITLE

Cyclones Annex 5 Championships

Williams-coached team piles up 42 points in meet held on Saturday

Watertown finishes 14 points ahead of Van Hornesville team

Sectional Tournament part of Indoor Sports Carnival held at Hamilton College

Watertown High School grapplers won the Section III wrestling championship on Saturday afternoon in the Sectional Indoor Sports Carnival that was held at the Hamilton College gymnasium in Clinton. The Watertown team, coached by Jack Williams, scored 42 points to carry away top honors in the event. Besides amassing the most points to win the team championship, the Cyclones won five individual championships.

Dick LaFountain, Harvey Bush, Don Hunt, Captain Eddie Eassa, and Wendy Tederson all won individual championships for the Watertown team. LaFountain grabbed off the 120 pound crown, while Bush won the 133 pound championship and Eassa grabbed the 145 pound honors, while Don Hunt won the title in the 138 pound class. Tederson annexed the 154 pound championship.

Farney of the Lowville team, a newcomer to interscholastic wrestling, won the unlimited class championship. Farney put on a splendid show to win the championship. He narrowly escaped pins in some of his matches, but came on to win the championship, showing real strength and courage against more experienced opponents.

Bill Trimm and Al Smith of Watertown reached the finals before they were eliminated. Ray Kingsbury, Jack Hunt, and Ken Gadbow all lost close decisions in the semi-finals. Jim Ingerson was eliminated in the quarter-finals by an opponent who went all the way to the finals. Sam Guardino, the heavyweight on the local team, was unable to wrestle, being ill.

Harvey Bush provided the highlight of the tournament from the Watertown viewpoint by pinning Bob Collins from Van Hornesville in the finals of the 133 pound class. Collins was the 127 pound champion last season. He was undefeated in competition this year, including two victories over Watertown and two over Mount Pleasant of Schenectady.

Dick LaFountain made eight of the Watertown 42 points. Wendy Tederson and Harvey Bush made seven points each and Eddie Eassa and Don Hunt made six points each.
